Southern Africa floods operation
January 2008

Mozambique Red Cross (MRC) boat volunteer Pascoa Joaquim, 26, reputedly the only woman in the village who can swim, stands in the prow of her MRC aquatic-rescue launch during training. Mozambican marines and MRC volunteers have been taking advantage of an apparent break in the rains upstream in the Buzi river system to hone their aquatic-rescue skills. Buzi is the national base for aquatic-rescue training by the Red Cross in Mozambique. The MRC and a marine detachment have between them ferried a total of 1,117 villagers to safety in the nearby resettlement centres of Guara Guara and Bandua in recent weeks.
