Pakistan:
faces of recovery

A young
woman washes cups and plates in a puddle of rainwater in Nawangran
Sobrian. The water supply for the village, which lies high
in the hills above the devastated town of Balakot, was severely
disrupted by floods and landslides this summer. As a result,
women are forced to walk up to a kilometre away, along a narrow,
steep path further up the mountain in search of water, which
they carry back in pots on their heads. A year after the earthquake,
water and sanitation needs remain and the International Federation
is working to help repair damaged storage tanks and pipe systems.
Female health workers and the Pakistan Red Crescent Society
are also working in many areas to inform groups of women about
good hygiene practices.
