Pakistan: faces of recovery
October 2006

A man sits in the remains of his home near Balakot in the North West Frontier Province. The earthquake damaged or destroyed over 400,000 rural homes and several months of regular aftershocks and bad weather following the earthquake have made it difficult for some families to rebuild. The government is helping people construct new homes through an owner-driven, cash grant scheme. Meanwhile, the International Federation has distributed over 72,000 tents, more than 218,000 sheets of corrugated galvanized iron and almost 22,000 shelter repair kits to assist people with the rebuilding process. But as another winter approaches, tens of thousands of people could still be without permanent shelter and the International Federation has made contingency plans to provide emergency shelter for another 13,500 families if necessary.
