Red Cross
volunteer Emile Tiendrebeogo plays with a child, but the underlying
message he and other volunteers are giving families is deadly
serious. Parents are warned about the non-native strain of
meningitis called W135. They are also taught to diagnose symptoms
early and are informed where free treatment can be obtained.
The W135 strain is thought to have been brought back by pilgrims
returning from Mecca. This strain accounts for close to half
of the infections this year.
