On 17
January 2002 the Nyiragongo volcano erupted destroying up
to 25 per cent of the town of Goma, sending 300,000 refugees
from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) into neighbouring
Rwanda and triggering an instantaneous Red Cross Red Crescent
response.
