Lesotho's
beautiful highlands belie the hardship endured by the people
who inhabit them. In such an arid landscape, making a living
from agriculture is difficult at the best of times. Two consecutive
years of bad harvests due to drought have made this nearly
impossible. By the New Year, a third of Lesotho's rural population
of about 600,000 will require emergency food assistance.
