Tsunami: one year after
April 2008 |

On 2 April 2007, a tsunami struck the island of Gizo. It killed 52 people and left more than 9,000 homeless. A local and international Red Cross response provided disaster relief, water and sanitation.
But the country has also been rocked by a five-year period of violent civil unrest which began in 1998 – a period known as the ‘tensions’. The impact of the violence – between populations in Guadalcanal and Malaita provinces – devastated the country. Along with near-economic collapse, social and health care services - in particular those in the affected communities - were decimated.
