The tsunami operation in Sri Lanka
February 2008
Previous Next

The Red Cross Red Crescent construction programme aims to fully fund or co-finance 29,663 houses across 12 of Sri Lanka’s tsunami affected districts. With an estimated 117,000 homes damaged or destroyed in the tsunami, providing permanent shelter to affected families has been the paramount humanitarian challenge. By the end of 2007, almost 100,000 houses had been rebuilt with donor support. As the biggest single donor to the housing sector, the Red Cross Red Crescent has supported the construction of 16,741 houses in 12 districts since 2005. The goal is to fully fund the construction of 6,200 houses and co-finance 23,463 homes. Work has now been completed on most donor-driven housing sites in the south of the country, but a number of projects in the north have experienced delays due to the uncertain security situation in the country.
