Every year, the monsoon season in Sri Lanka affects thousands of people with floods, landslides and cyclones. Sri Lanka Red Cross Society district branches have always responded to natural disasters and reducing risk is one of the main priorities of the society’s disaster management programme. Since the middle of 2006, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society has worked to improve the skills of the staff and volunteers who manage emergency relief. Branch Disaster Response Teams have been created, each of which is comprised of between 25 and 30 volunteers and staff. Members of these teams are required to carry out a week’s intensive training course.
