At 142nd place, Timor-Leste is the poorest Asian country on the UN’s human development index.
More than 70 percent of people live in isolated rural areas, getting by on subsistence agriculture – mostly corn, rice and coffee. Many regularly face seasonal food shortages. The average income is less than US$800 a year.
