World AIDS Day
December 2007

This sticker on a fridge in South Africa is a poignant reminder of the importance of a mother in a child's life. There are around 4.6 million children in the region who have lost their parents to the pandemic. And many are growing up not only without their mothers or fathers, but without any adult at all to take care of them. When whole families are wiped out by AIDS, it often falls to the older children to become 'mum' or 'dad'.
