Heavy
rains in late May 2004 caused devastating floods across southern
Haiti and the Dominican Republic, which killed at least 2,000
people and displaced thousands more. Water supplies were contaminated
by human and animal corpses, prompting a major effort by the
Haitian Red Cross to promote greater awareness of sanitation
and water-borne diseases.
