From the Secretary General
Throughout 2002, the International
Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies was at
the forefront in responding to the many humanitarian emergencies
and situations around the world that threatened human dignity.
The Federation, through our National Societies, worked side
by side with communities to reduce risks and vulnerabilities,
and find long-term solutions to improve their lives. Underlying
our action was a firm commitment to our humanitarian principles
and values, promoting tolerance, mutual understanding, and
respect for human life and dignity.
Whether in response to floods in Europe
and Central America, harsh winters in parts of Asia, or the
social and economic crisis in Afghanistan or Argentina, the
Red Cross Red Crescent was there. We were also there to respond
to the deepening crisis in southern Africa, where the effects
of HIV/AIDS and famine have had devastating consequences for
millions of people, and elsewhere in the world, where health
epidemics, malnutrition and poverty affect millions more.
National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies were also amongst
the first to provide relief and assistance in situations of
violence and conflict, such as the tragic bombings in Bali
and the hostage crisis in Russia.
Because of our reputation as an effective, neutral and impartial
humanitarian organization, the Federation was able to provide
support to millions of vulnerable people last year.
Our outstanding response to humanitarian needs is a reflection
of the Federation's ongoing efforts to ensure responsive and
focused programming, build a strong network of well-functioning
National Societies, and work together in effective partnerships.
During 2002, we made important advances in each of these areas,
as shown in this annual report.
The report highlights our many achievements and reinforces
the message that by working together to confront hardship
and suffering, intolerance and discrimination, we can and
do make a difference for the world's most vulnerable people.
I am certain that this message will continue to motivate and
guide our work each day in the coming year.
