Project welcomed by representatives from key humanitarian agencies |
An overview
of the work undertaken by the International Federation on the
IDRL Project was recently presented to the Inter-Agency Standing
Committee (IASC) Working Group meeting in Geneva on 9 July 2003
by Frank Mohrhauer, Senior Legal Officer from the International
Federation. The meeting consisted of representatives from the
major UN agencies and a number of other major international
NGOs.
The meeting participants welcomed the International Federation's
initiative to examine and strengthen existing international
legal and other regulatory instruments relating international
disaster response. The meeting provided a good opportunity to
discuss the activities and opportunities created by the IDRL
Project which could potentially benefit all organisations that
are involved in responding to situations of natural and technological
disasters. It is hoped that close collaboration between the
various agencies on this important topic will continue in the
future. |
| What
is the IASC? |
| "The
Inter-Agency Standing Committee is a forum that brings together
a broad range of UN and non-UN humanitarian partners including
UN humanitarian agencies, IOM, three consortia of major international
NGOs and the Red Cross movement represented by ICRC and IFRC.
The primary role of the IASC is to formulate humanitarian policy
to ensure coordinated and effective humanitarian response to
both complex emergency and to natural disasters." (Quote
