Since 2003, the International Federation has been increasing its use of DREF, particularly for small-scale emergencies that do not require an international emergency appeal. This has enabled an increasing number of National Societies to respond more quickly to disasters and has widened the scope of Red Cross Red Crescent interventions. In 2007, a total of 107 allocations were made for a total of 12,689,170 Swiss Francs.
The majority of the recorded disaster response operations by Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies in 2007 were in Africa, which, like the other regions, experienced a majority of weather-related disasters. Half of all allocations, and over half of the allocations for small-scale emergencies or DREF Operations were for African Red Cross / Red Crescent National Societies. The trend of an increase in weather-related disasters is expected to continue due to the effects of Climate Change. |
