Humanitarian crisis in the Middle East

As peacekeepers move into southern Lebanon, Red Cross and Red Crescent staff and trained volunteers are assisting vulnerable communities affected by the conflict.

The Lebanese Red Cross which carried out 80 per cent of the ambulance missions during hostilities continues to provide emergency medical services free-of-charge.

Tens of thousands of refugees and evacuees from Lebanon have been assisted by Syrian Arab Red Crescent and Cyprus Red Cross.

An estimated 16,000 residential units have been destroyed in the fighting and a further 15,000 were damaged.

The International Federation is seeking 5 million Swiss francs (€ 3.2 million / US $4.1 million) in its emergency appeal to assist 65,000 people and replenish emergency stocks.

As the situation in Syria has changed following the return of over 90% of the Lebanese who crossed the borders into Syria, the Federation is in the process of revising the appeal launched on 11 August, 2006.

Lebanon: the call of humanitarian duty
Youssef Boutros, head of the Lebanese Red Cross Emergency Medical Service (EMS) teams in the Northern District, was reluctant to be unfair to the young men and women who looked exhausted and whose bodies longed for sleep after weeks of very long days and very short nights. He did not want to take the decision himself, so he left the matter to them. “Those who want to leave can, those who want to stay are welcome to,” he said.

Heavy fighting continues in the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr el-Bared, near Tripoli in northern Lebanon, between Islamic armed groups and the Lebanese army. According to local Red Cross and Red Crescent sources, thousands of civilians remain in the camp. Working in close cooperation and round the clock, Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) and Lebanese Red Cross (LRC) volunteers are delivering relief to families still inside the camp and evacuating the wounded. A story of courage and heroism during the war in Lebanon in the summer of 2006. In spite of shelling and extreme fatigue, an aging lady never gave up on getting her wounded husband to hospital. Then, Hajjah Sahrifah, 64 years old, used a wheelbarrow to get him to hospital when she could not carry the old man any more. But, she never let go of him.

Lebanese Red Cross: emerging stronger from hostilities
The Lebanese Red Cross (LRC) has been, since 1995 and by governmental mandate, the most important provider of first aid and medical ambulance services in the country. During the month-long hostilities which devastated Lebanon between mid-July and mid-August, it faced its biggest challenge ever: responding to the emergency needs of a population of nearly four million people, of whom nearly 800,000 fled to other parts of Lebanon and thus became internally displaced. Nearly 200,000 people fled to Syria.
