Pakistan earthquake
During the emergency relief phase half a million people received health care from the PRCS/International and Movement partners. Mobile health teams continue to reach up to 2,000 people a week (Photo: David Bebber/The Times)

Almost three years following the devastating earthquake which struck Pakistan on 8 October 2005, the recovery process is in full swing. Relief has given way to recovery with the focus now on activities to get people back on their feet. This involves 42 reconstruction projects, health and care programmes, livelihoods, continuing water and sanitation rehabilitation, and strengthening the disaster management of communities and the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS).

The relief effort was a success. A total of 1.1 million people received non-food emergency relief items during the emergency phase. Approximately half a million people received health care assistance while nearly 90,000 people now have improved access to water.

Recovery and rehabilitation activities will take until the end of 2009 to finish. The Pakistan Red Crescent, supported for the International Federation will be rolling out earthquake recovery activities for another two years. The shock of the terrible death toll of 73,000 and massive damage to infrastructure has given way to hope. The Red Cross Red Crescent is a committed partner with the people of Pakistan to complete the process of recovery.

Opinion: reaching out to rural areasReaching out to rural areas
One year has passed since the devastating earthquake in northern Pakistan, which claimed over 73,000 lives and left around 3.5 million people homeless. The disaster was a cruel blow to the communities of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, many of whom now face renewed hardship, following heavy flooding and landslides this summer.

Concrete progress in Pakistan
Two years ago concrete was a killer in Pakistan when the devastating earthquake struck Pakistan. Today it is a sign of recovery around the numerous building sites across North West Frontier Province and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. On October 8 2005, shattered pillars, giant slabs which had plummeted to the ground and mountains of rubble dominated the landscape of some of the worst hit areas.
