| On 15 August, 2007, a
major 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit Peru's central coast south
of Lima. It destroyed the towns of Pisco and Ica, and left
thousands homeless.
In an instant, houses, hospitals, shops
and services were completely wiped out. More than 500 people
were killed and strong aftershocks forced terrified residents
to sleep outside for many days.
The International Federation of Red Cross
and Red Crescent Societies and the Peruvian Red Cross immediately
mobilized disaster relief specialists and volunteers to provide
assistance to those in need. |
