As Southern Africa
slowly recovers from serious drought since many months, as the
situation improves in many of the affected countries, pockets
of food insecurity still exist and the situation is precarious
and requires urgent attention. Efforts continue in support to
prevent further crises.
The deadly spread of HIV/AIDS exacerbates the food insecurity
situation since the high number of people living with HIV or
who died of AIDS has a direct impact on agriculture and livelihoods.
Many orphans and child-headed families are facing an uncertain
future. Home-based care programmes run by Red Cross volunteers
are helping those affected by the AIDS pandemic within their
communities.

Zimbabwe: “The situation is critical” says Red Cross secretary general On 6 August, the IFRC appealed for almost 28 million Swiss francs to provide urgent assistance to hundreds of thousands of people affected by chronic food shortages in Zimbabwe. According to a June 2008 UN Food and Agricultural Organization/World Food Programme report, by the end of the year more than five million people – almost half of the country’s entire population could be without access to food.
