Faces of recovery in Sri Lanka: Mohanaradhan's story |
 |
Twelve-year-old Shanmugam Mohanaradhan and his great aunt Murugesu Sunderawelu stand in the hall of his aunt’s home in Karaitvu, in Sri Lanka’s eastern district of Ampara. Mohanaradhan lost his mother, sister and grandmother in the tsunami. He is a beneficiary of a Red Cross supported home owner driven reconstruction programme. His new home is being built with a grant provided by the British Red Cross.

Mohanaradhan and his friend Kushanthan watch a movie on his computer. Mohanaradhan’s uncle bought him the computer, taught him how to use applications and coaches him in his English. He has consistently been first in his class at the local school and plans to become a doctor. He says the grandmother he lost in the tsunami always wanted him to become a doctor.

Mohanaradhan was selected to a team chosen by the Danish Red Cross for a photography project. Here, he shows off the photograph he took of his house under construction. His father has remarried and Mohanaradhan now lives with his great aunt and her family, until construction on his home is complete.

His mother, grandmother and sister were at home when the tsunami struck and were washed away in the surge. Mohanaradhan only survived because he was returning to his great aunt’s house from Sunday school.
