Faces of recovery in Sri Lanka: Nishanthi's story |
 |
Rubasinghe Nishanthi plays with her son at her new home in Balapitiya, in Sri Lanka’s southern district of Galle. Nishanthi lives with her husband and two children in a two story house built for the family by the Red Cross. The family lived in a house by the sea in nearby Ambalangoda, which together with all their possessions was washed away in the tsunami. The 56 houses at Thalgasgodawatte, were constructed by the Sri Lanka Red Cross and the IFRC.

Nishanthi and daughter Aavindya Devindi clean fish for cooking in front of their home in Balapitiya. Nishanthi’s husband Ranga was a regular fisherman but now sells fish in the local market and sometimes works on a boat as a crew member.

Nishanthi watches as her son and niece play in her sitting room. The two bedroom, two story house is a big improvement on the temporary wood and tin shack at their old compound where they have lived for the past two and a half years.

Nishanthi’s husband Ranga, son Devinda and daughter Devindi play a game of cricket in the yard of their new home at Balapitiya. The house is halfway up a hill overlooking rice paddy fields. The Red Cross continues to provide water by tanker until work on the internal water supply system is completed. All housing schemes built by Red Cross Red Crescent partners have water, sanitation and electricity infrastructure.
