HIV
Achievements
Since 2000 the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has significantly increased its commitment to the HIV response.
While the nature of the HIV pandemic means there is still a long way to go, the International Federation’s Global Programme has begun to make inroads. Some examples:
- The International Federation has been well placed to eliminate stigma and discrimination through social inclusion. The strategic partnership with the Global Network of People living with HIV/AIDS (GNP+) has increased the credibility of the organization and improved programming.
- Launched a Global Alliance on HIV on which 59 National Societies are participating.
- "The Truth About AIDS Pass it on ..." has been by far the most visible and long term advocacy campaign of the International Federation on a specific issue in recent years.
- The MASAMBO fund has been established.
- The "International Federation Secretariat HIV in the Workplace Directive" has been updated continuously.
- The importance of workplace programs has been recognized more widely.
- A larger number of National Societies have implemented harm reduction activities.
- Home based care programmes have been extended, especially in countries with a high HIV prevalence.
- Six pilot programmes on anti-retroviral treatment have been started.
