Blood donation

Blood donationThe International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is the global leader in the supply and collection of voluntary non remunerated blood donation. The organization is influencing policies and funding to enhance the safety of blood by drawing on donations from low risk populations. Programmes such as sex education campaigns and support for health promotion activities become part of a long term strategy to establish a base of safe blood donors.

Since 2001, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies maintains a highly successful partnership with WHO, collaborating to map needs and capacities systematically.

Donor recruitment efforts in developing countries are set up by establishing a database of self sufficiency models and strategies collected from developed blood services. Pilot mentoring programmes to enhance the effectiveness of recruiters worldwide and the establishment of advisory groups to provide a forum for discussion, advice and mediation on complex blood issues are important activities to sustain the International Federation’s leadership role in voluntary non remunerated blood donations.
