HIV first aid guidelines

As HIV/AIDS continues to devastate communities all over the world, the Red Cross Red Crescent recognises the magnitude of the problem and the need for action. It is important for everyone to know how the virus is - and importantly, how it is not - transmitted, how to prevent transmission and how to reduce the impact of HIV on families and communities.

First aid provides an opportunity to make a difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Practical, protective and precautionary measures can be taken when administering first aid which it is hoped will encourage people to treat anyone in need without discrimination. Finding out more about the disease and getting involved in the HIV/AIDS awareness and promotion activities in communities can help change attitudes and behaviours and encourage people to adopt a healthier and safer lifestyle.

Guidelines on first aid and HIV/AIDS is an International Federation produced booklet and CD-Rom which focuses on concerns about transmission in first aid situations, and provides preventive measures and hygienic practices to prevent infection.
