HIV
Stigma and discrimination
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has been at the forefront of global communication efforts to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS.
The campaigns aim to create an environment where HIV - and the factors that increase people’s vulnerability - can be discussed openly. Such an environment will increase the willingness to accept treatment, support and care. It will help people to live full lives within their communities and to feel empowered to contribute actively to the response to the virus.
Over the past few years, the International Federation has worked in partnership with other key players such as UNAIDS, WHO, the Global Network of People living with HIV/AIDS and the International Council of Women Living with HIV and AIDS.
National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and delegations work in the local areas with audiovisual and printed materials, information and ideas. They also engage spokespersons and ambassadors to speak on issues of stigma and discrimination. The societies work at a local level in direct dialogue with local leaders and community groups to ensure that their practices and policies are welcome and supportive to people living with HIV.
Campaigns of this nature have been very successful in areas as disparate as Mongolia, Cambodia, Eastern Europe and Australia.
