Psychological support
Managing stress in the field
|
 |
 |
Victims of disasters and conflict are not the only people who risk suffering psychological stress following traumatic events - relief workers may also be psychologically affected by their experiences in the field. |
 |
The International
Federation recognises this and provides psychological support
to its delegates.Since 1993, the psychological support programme
for delegates has gradually gained wide recognition within National
Societies, the Secretariat and among delegates. At present,
there are two Geneva-based stress counsellors who are committed
to supporting delegates during their assignments.
In
addition to the support programmes, the publication Managing
Stress in the Field has been designed to give practical
advice to relief workers before, during and after their mission.
Its aim is to help those working in the field to recognise,
prevent and reduce stress in the field. It is hoped that through
the stress support programme and publication, relief workers
can take better care of themselves and increase their capacity
to help others.
