When
disaster strikes, assessing health needs and implementing relevant
relief assistance is vital. The specific skills needed for an effective
response are complex and efforts are required at many levels within
a country to ensure skills are built and developed.
Building emergency relief skills requires not only technical health
training but also education in emergency preparedness and response.
In collaboration with the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public
Health based in America, the International Federation has produced
a guide called Public Health Guide for Emergencies. This guide
is designed to serve as a reference for such training for government,
Red Cross Red Crescent, and local non-governmental groups.
The Public Health Guide for Emergencies is available on CD-ROM and as hard copy.
To request a copy, please contact the
health department.
