Asylum Seeker Assistance Scheme (ASAS) - Australian Red Cross
This scheme provides financial assistance
and health care to eligible asylum seekers who have been waiting
for six months or more for their Protection Visa applications to
be finalised.
The Scheme provides a range of services
across 11 metropolitan centres and five regional offices, including
health support, counselling, material aid, accommodation, legal
and education referrals and social and employment support.
In 1999-2000 the Scheme assisted 2 140
asylum seekers with a budget of $ 9.5 million. The ASAS is a Commonwealth
Government scheme administered by Red Cross.
