Refugee Guide Programme - Norwegian Red Cross
This programme run by the Norwegian Red
Cross started as a pilot in May 1999, and by April 2002 23 projects
were up and running serviced by 450 volunteers, some of whom came
from the Red Cross Youth.
The purpose of the project is to encourage the integration of refugees
into the local community through increased participation in community
life by providing opportunities for refugees to come in contact
with Norwegians. Such social contacts are essential if one is to
learn a new language, find a job or study.
The project has been successful in increasing interaction between
refugees and Norwegians. Both refugees and guides who participate
in the programme have gained both vocational experience and personal
references that they may utilise in future studies and work, in
addition some refugees have gained employment through the help of
their guides
Guides and refugees have gained knowledge about each other through
group and individual meetings. This has led to a change in the stereotypical
image that many Norwegians have of refugees and vice versa.
