Every day in Mozambique, 10 people are killed or maimed by landmines.
To date, more than 120,000 people have become victims of this legacy
of Mozambique's civil war. With an estimated two million mines still
buried around roads, bridges, water sources and villages, people
are at risk every day.
Some 300 Mozambican Red Cross youth volunteers are teaching people
how to live safely in these dangerous zones. Organized into groups,
they spread information on mines, collect data on suspected mine
areas, and provide first aid to victims and support to accident
survivors.
Using theatre, reading and discussion groups, the youth volunteers
inform local people about the dangers of mines. They also help erect
billboards around mined land and distribute leaflets and posters.
The project aims to reach 200,000 inhabitants in the worst-affected
areas.
