Through this programme, children and youth volunteers of the Mexican
Red Cross youth not only provide valuable assistance to their communities,
but also learn to value their own youth and respect the elderly.
So far, more than 1,400 youth volunteers in many branches are involved,
assisting the elderly with medical consultations and home repairs;
providing medicines, clothes and food; and simply keeping them company.
The programme gives the volunteers an opportunity to reduce the
vulnerability of, and increase their solidarity with, one of the
least protected groups of the population.
Unfortunately, some youth have also experienced the lost of some
adopted grandparents. “It has been a very nice experience
to see that despite the very young age of some team member we are
able to offer love and friendship, and to be repaid with a smile,”
says Miriam Servin Alva, Córdoba, Veracruz.
