Winner of the Youth Protecting Human Dignity Award 2005 for the
Middle East and North Africa region, recognized during the International
Federation General Assembly in Seoul, Korea, 2005.
To raise awareness of the problems and dangers of explosive remnants
of war mainly among children and youth, and to work with the communities
to reduce the risks, the Palestine Red Crescent youth started mine
risk education in high-risk areas in 1999. The main activity of
the programme is a large scale awareness campaign with, by and for
youth. Activities include training courses for the volunteers, songs,
theatre plays, games, distribution of posters and leaflets, preparation
of training manuals and dissemination of principles and values.
More than 250 volunteers have been trained and over 100,000 people
reached by the interactive methods of the campaign and learned about
the dangers of mines and how to identify and react to a suspected
mine. Youth volunteers have also gained knowledge and recognition
through their contribution.
