Youth are the backbone of Baphalali branch of the Swaziland Red Cross Society
. About two thirds of the volunteers in the Baphalali Swaziland
Red Cross Society are youth. They are fully engaged and involved
in every activity or project carried out by the National Society,
mainly providing relief during disasters, first aid services, HIV and AIDS
activities (Peer education), and dissemination of Red Cross principles
and humanitarian values.
In their work to reduce HIV infection and mortality rates among
young people they apply three principles: abstinence, condom promotion,
and peer education through theatre. The volunteers use comedy and
drama to convey the message of HIV prevention at all social
levels. Clowns and actors are engaged in community work and school
visits where the education and information work is taking place.
The main results of this project are a positive change of attitudes
and behavior that lead to a changing practice.
