The urban moderators (modérateurs urbaine) programme which
started in 1999, now runs in disadvantaged urban neighbourhoods
in 13 districts. Young people from such areas are recruited and
trained by the French Red Cross to be "yrban moderators".
The aim of the programme is to invent new methods of social action
relevant to run-down urban areas. The urban moderators (also called
"inner city professionals") have two main roles. The first
is promoting Red Cross services such as first aid, preventive health
education, social aid and social welfare and the second is mediating
between residents of the disadvantaged neighbourhoods and public
and private services in the city.
