Discrimination is widely prevailing in Nepal. Drug users, HIV positive people, poor, elderly and people living with disabilities; these are only some
of the groups that suffer from stigma and discrimination. The Nepal
Red Cross is fighting this discrimination through the involvement
of its youth members.
In 2005, an action plan to fight discrimination was prepared by
the youth members. Activities included campaigns, performances and
competitions to raise the awareness of the general public.
Promotion of the Fundamental Principles and humanitarian values
is incorporated in most Junior and Youth activities at all levels
in Nepal, and the youth carry the messages on to their families
and friends.
Through these activities, community awareness has increased,
as has general attitudes towards tolerance and respect for human
dignity.
There are around 800 000 junior and youth Red Cross members in Nepal.
The hope is to involve all of them in order to contribute positively
in a wide scale, reducing discrimination through a wide implementation
of the awareness programme.
