During its deliberations in 2005, the International Federation Governing Board approved the Youth Commission initiative to establish the first international youth award aimed at providing worldwide recognition of how youth volunteers make a difference by providing a service to, advocating for or working with the vulnerable people in the communities.

The International Federation youth award, which was given for the first time at the 15th General Assembly in 2005, is crucial to profile the work that active youth volunteers are doing every day all over the world in Red Cross Red Crescent Societies. In order to recognize and reward the contribution of youth toward achieving our humanitarian goals, the International Federation will give them the chance to participate in the most important meeting of our organization, the General Assembly. Feedback from the winners of the 2005 award showed how this kind of recognition can help the National Society to attract the interest of more donors as well as the benefits from the laptop offered as a prize, which help ensure computer literacy, as well as communication skills, resulting in more effective programmes and have easier access to the knowledge in the Internet.
