About
joining the Red Cross:
I joined the Red Cross in 1985, when I was 10 years old. I
participated in youth camps and passed the youth training
programme of the Red Cross. When I was 14, I became gradually
integrated into the work of the Red Cross. I started assisting
those younger than me and participating in activities that
interested me. At the age of 18, I officially became a volunteer
of my National Society, and I am now involved in the youth
activities and with first aid trainings.
My best experience in the Red Cross:
My best experience so far happened last year, during the heavy
rainfalls in Senegal which left thousands of persons homeless.
I found myself leading a group of 30 volunteers working in
a camp with 5500 victims of the disaster. For six months we
assisted with food distribution, evacuation of the sick, putting
up tents and cleaning the camp, and doing activities with
the children in the evenings. The disaster victims were very
grateful and took every opportunity to thank the volunteers. Expectations
for the Youth Commission:
I hope to help all the African National Societies to develop
youth structures and get youth policies in place. I also hope
to help with the development of sub regional youth networks
throughout the continent and to strengthen the communication
among youth in my continent and those in other parts of the
world.
