Romanian Youth Camp focused on dissemination.
August 2004
Elena Bloj, Brasov, Romania
In August, 2004, 80 young volunteers from 24 branches of the Romanian Red Cross were gathered for a one-week camp to be trained in dissemination. The 3rd Romanian Red Cross National Youth Camp was arranged with the support of ICRC.

Uzu Valley is the perfect place for camping, located in the heart of the Ciuc Mountains. The camp was held on the bank of the Uzu River from the 11th to the 18th of August.

The youth were divided in four groups. The dissemination lectures were well structured, and mainly based on case studies. As an introduction to the courses, a short movie on the about the International Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement was shown, giving a general idea about the topics. The lectures took place in the morning. They were easy to assimilate, starting with a presentation of the daily topic and ending with case studies, debates and funny games. In some of the evenings, when the weather was favorable, we were shown theme films related to the implementation of the IHL.

In the afternoons, other activities were arranged. There were workshops in various areas and topics. The “creativity circle” wrote a camp anthem and made some interesting programs, and the logistics group ensured the smooth running of the camp and arranged a challenging one-day expedition in the mountains. The local press was invited when the group presented their trip with a sense of humor, even though it had a serious purpose.

The facilities at the camp were a challenge, but the lack of modern utilities didn’t prevent the week from begin fun. The youth made a shower by the river; dug fireplaces for the kitchen and the campfire; and tried to keep the nature intact. The weather was a bit harsh, with rain in the first days, but then the temperature increased. Although it was warm in the afternoon, several sweaters were needed at night, and the campfire kept the participants warm after dark.

This camp was a great success. It reached the goal of training the youth in the field of dissemination; it increased the knowledge about the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and was also a great opportunity to make new friends.
The participants of the camp participated in lectures and activiteis to increase their dissemination skills.
