Youth
are a potentially rich human resource for the development of
Cambodia, as they make up over 50 per cent of the population. Yet, many
youth lack the opportunity to contribute to the growth of their
country in meaningful ways. Since 1996, to address this challenge,
the Cambodian Red Cross Youth Programme, through its Red Cross
Youth Network, has created diverse avenues for young people
to enhance their knowledge, gain skills, build friendships and
design and participate in development projects relevant to their
lives and to the betterment of their communities.
The CRC Youth Strategy, established in 2004, hopes to build
and expand on these successes. With support from the Australian
Red Cross, Swedish Red Cross, and International Federation of
Red Cross and Red Crescent, the Youth Strategy 2004-2010 is
a roadmap, providing clear direction for the long-term development
of the Programme and for achieving greater impact at the grassroots
level.
Youth desire nothing less than having their thoughts and opinions
listened to and respected. With this in mind, great care was
taken to ensure that the Strategy was developed through a bottom-up,
consultative process involving Red Cross Youth, Branches, and
beneficiaries from across the country. These series of consultations
culminated in the Youth Strategy Workshop held in July 2004,
where the ideas and feedback gathered from the discussions helped
the Youth Programme formulate a new, more holistic vision, mission,
and long-term strategic goals for the coming seven years.
The Vision is:
Cambodian Red Cross Youth actively responds to social issues
and ensures the enhancement of humanitarian values among young
people throughout Cambodia.
The Mission is:
To develop and strengthen the CRC Youth Network especially
in the area of Health and Prevention, Disaster Response, and
the Promotion of Humanitarian Values.
The Strategic Goals identified in the Strategy focus on building
leadership skills among youth, developing projects and activities
that are responsive to the needs of young people, and networking
with other youth-focused civil society actors.
“With this Strategy”, says Kolap Hul, the CRC Youth
Manager, “the Youth Programme can now confidently meet
its challenges and progress towards becoming an integral component
within the Cambodian Red Cross and a key actor in the ongoing
development of the youth of Cambodian.”
