Youth coordinators from South American Red Cross National Societies participated in the VII annual Red Cross Youth Meeting for the region, 4-7 July them: Asunción Paraguay. They came together to discuss various topics, make a common work plan and build their movement.

The agenda included reporting sessions, SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats), forums, team work and an evaluation of the South American Youth Network. Roberta Zuchegna, International Federation Youth Officer, attended the meeting together with network’s members.

One of the main goals of the meeting was to create a Youth Network that is truly based on the needs and challenges of the National Societies. After hours of discussion, consensus got near to first model proposed. The arguments of the discussion were diverse, but always helpful, since the goal is to build an informal space where the members can discuss and share information, in order to consolidate an institutional structure within a complex organization. The efforts of the youth clearly follow other initiatives at the international level to strengthen the Red Cross and Red Crescent Youth to reach the overall objective of mobilizing the power of humanity.

During the meeting the youth leaders also decided to strengthen links with the Youth Focal Point of the International Federation, focusing on closer work strategies and better and more permanent communication spaces.

After four days of working sessions, the participants created the work plan for 2005-2006. It includes HIV/AIDS anti stigma and prevention activities, peace education and youth violence prevention strategies, and finally promoting the Fundamental Principles and Values of the Movement.

Regarding youth violence prevention, they agreed to organize a regional seminar that will let them share successful experiences implemented in South American countries and that also that could help define the strategic direction of the work of the youth network.

The next Regional Youth Meeting will be in the first part of 2006 and the coordinator elected for this period is Pablo Salamone, Youth Coordinator for the Argentine Red Cross. José Ramón González, from the Venezuelan Red Cross, was elected sub-Coordinator.
The seventh annual South American Red Cross Youth meeting was held in Paraguay in July.
