"A woman works here"
March 8, 2006
Maite Gutiérrez Cachán
International Women's Day is celebrated on 8 March each year. The Spanish Red Cross youth is participating in the commemoration of this day, focusing on gender equality and women’s rights. They are addressing a field where differences between men and women exist despite of legal and social progress in recent years, namely the right to work.

To bring attention to this issue, Spanish Red Cross youth volunteers are distributing more than 30,000 posters with the slogan “A WOMAN WORKS HERE” all around Spain. They are inviting women to participate in their campaign by hanging the posters in their work places. Women working at home are encouraged to hang the poster in their house. Housework is not viewed in the same way as other work by the laws or by society, but those working at home are also contributing to society.
Furthermore, the Spanish Red Cross youth focus on the labour market, as the situation of women is still disadvantaged to men in all countries of the European Union.

The International Women’s Day is an annual opportunity for Spanish Red Cross, as well as for many other organizations, to reflect on the progress made regarding women’s rights and to demand further changes and development. It is also a day to commemorate the courage of women who have contributed to development throughout the history of women’s rights!
