Thanks
to the International Federation Youth Award, the Cameroon Red
Cross Society Youth Section now plans to improve computer skills,
retain young people in the Red Cross, and create an income generating
activity; all through the same programme.
In 2005, the Cameroon Red Cross Society Youth won the Youth
Protecting Human Dignity Award of the International Federation
for the Africa region with its programme on working with street
children. The Award was initiated by the International Federation
Youth Commission, and the awarded programmes were recognized
during the General Assembly in Seoul.
The Award was sponsored by Library of Life, and each winning
programme received a laptop computer with software installed
and internet connection for one year. It is this prize that
has enabled and inspired the Cameroon Red Cross Youth Section
to ensure computer literacy among young people and furthermore
to set up a cyber café in the National Headquarters.
Already a few months after receiving the prize, youth in the
National Society have brought their computer skills up to date.
The plans now are to obtain a few more computers, and to set
up a cyber café. The café will be run by volunteers
together with the Red Cross youth coordinator, and will fulfil
a three-fold objective: retaining young people in the Red Cross
by keeping them occupied at the Headquarters; getting young
people up to speed with today’s world and with the internet
in particular by encouraging them to surf the internet and enabling
them to do so at a lower cost; and finally to create an income
generating activity for the Red Cross Youth. The proceeds from
this activity will be used to set up a relief fund for future
activities.
Once again, congratulations to the Cameroon Red Cross Youth
for winning the Award, and for putting the prize to good use!
