Egypt
train crash — young volunteers provide support

The 21 August, 2006, two trains colided in the Nile Delta,
20 km outside Cairo. As soon as the news came through about
the crash, the Egyptian Red Crescent’s trained local volunteers
made their way to the scene, offering first aid and psychosocial
support to the victims of the crash.

eager Red Cross volunteer from Damascus, Syria, plans to learn
seven different languages so that he can “speak with
everyone in the world” and puts all his effort into

Training
young people as volunteers of the future in Indonesia

The national youth camp, or ‘Jumbara’, of Indonesia Red Cross,
aims to develop volunteers of the future through activities
that encourage young people’s understanding of relevant issues
and stimulates them to get involved. Held every five years,
this Jumbara is the largest, with 3,097 youth delegates mostly
aged from 10 to 17.

The 8 March is International Women’s Day. The Spanish Red
Cross youth is commemorating this day, focusing on gender
equality and women’s rights. They are addressing a field
where differences between men and women exist despite of legal
and social progress in recent years, namely the right
to work.

Don't
drink and drive - a Lebanese Red Cross youth campaign

In order to reduce the loss of human lives due to drinking
and driving, the Lebanese Red Cross youth department organized
a National Campaign on the 29th of December 2005. All Red
Cross youth centres in Lebanon were invited to take part in
the nationwide campaign.

The MENA youth coordinating committee is having its 2nd meeting
in Tunis in the middle of February. This committee was elected
during the first MENA youth meeting, held in June 2005. This
meeting, and the youth in the Middle East and North Africa
region were highlighted in the last issue of the RCRC Magazine,
printed in English, French, Spanish and, particular to this
issue, also in Arabic.
