This year, the Korean Red Cross selected 43 youth members from across the country to participate in the Global Leaders Project. The group was made up of elementary, middle, high school and university students, all of which are members of the Red Cross Youth in their local community. The Project aims to be a long-lasting partner of Korean youth, and to give them a chance to broaden their minds and spirits with a humanitarian understanding. The project included various sessions and events to make the experience both meaningful and worthwhile for the participants.
On 18 July, the delegation had an honour to meet the Secretary General of the UN. The Secretary General sincerely welcomed the young people from the opposite side of the world. The young delegates had the opportunity to speak with the Secretary General, and he explained about future cooperation between the UN and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, stressing the importance of cooperation among international bodies to spread and realize the humanitarian spirit. He advised his young visitors to have an ambitious dream but always be modest in finding the right way to achieve it.
“The Secretary General stressed that we had a lot of things to do to make a better world. As a former member of the Red Cross Youth, he wanted us to be a people who always put others first, realizing the humanitarian and philanthropic spirit of the Red Cross.”

On 20 July, the delegation visited the headquarters of the American Red Cross. Team members toured the facilities of the society including the Disaster Management Centre, including the well-equipped national disaster management system. Also the young Koreans joined in the class of “Masters of Disaster,” learning valuable and practical anti-disaster techniques.
The American Red Cross explained the advanced disaster management system they use to ensure the most effective response to the needs of people during or after disasters. Through this opportunity, the participants learned about the importance of a strong network among local chapters to deliver better Red Cross services to the people in hardship.
The participants of the 2007 Global Leaders Project were extremely satisfied with the programme. They hope that this project will continue to grow, so that more young people will have the chance to join in the leadership program. To fulfil this expectation, the Korean Red Cross is planning to continue this as an annual program. The Korean Red Cross will constantly offer quality youth programs to youth in order to enrich their hearts and minds and spread the humanitarian spirit of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
“Thanks to the Global Leaders Project, I could gain a new milestone not only for my life but also for my dreams, not to mention precious memories and valuable experiences. I wish to see more Global Leaders Projects in coming years, giving new hope and dreams to the young and nurturing true future leaders of the world. For me, the project was a once in a life time opportunity that opened the doors to new opportunities, new dreams and a new future. Once again, I want to thank the Korean Red Cross for giving me this opportunity.”
