Malagasy Red Cross Youth volunteers prepare for disaster
06 December 2007
Mbola Ranaivomanana, Communications Officer, Malagasy Red Cross
In Madagascar, Foulpointe and Soanierena Ivongo are two of the areas which are most at risk and also most affected by natural disasters. These areas are located on the east coast of the island. The consequences of tropical cyclones include damage caused by high winds, floods and landslides.  From 18 - 23 November, the National Bureau of risk management and disaster organized a simulation-type cyclone in Foulpointe and Soanierana Ivongo.  Red Cross Youth volunteers took part in the simulation.

At Foulpointe, a group of about twenty young volunteers have erected the camp under the technical guidance of Norbert Allalé, delegate of the International Federation in the area of risk management and disaster. Twenty tents were erected quickly and properly to accommodate the victims.  These twenty tents had the capacity to accommodate over 100 people in the event of a disaster. At the other location, Soanierana Ivongo, a group of volunteers completed a similar operation during the simulation while a third group of volunteers began purifying water for use by the “victims”.  The volunteers approached the exercise as if it was a real life situation. To reinforce the realism, they ate using banana leaves as plates, because there was not enough spoons and plates. In addition, they slept in the tents during the operation. None returned home, even if they lived near the simulation site.

These Red Cross Youth volunteers now have valuable experience that will allow them to better help their own communities in the event of natural disasters such as hurricanes.  The skills and experience of how they would have to respond to such a disaster that they acquired could prove invaluable when faced with similar situations in the future.
