As in previous years, on 12 and 13 January, the youth of the Cordoba branch of the Mexican Red Cross made a delivery of toys, warm clothes and medical assistance on the occasion of the “Day of Kings”. This year, they visited Potrero Nuevo, City of La Perla, Veracruz, a community located at the top of the Pico de Orizaba volcano, which is extremely isolated.
In this community of more than 200 families, many live in extreme poverty and suffer from inclement weather; especially this winter, which has proved to be one of the coldest in living memory. The community also has many older people and children who are less are badly affected by such weather.
Mexican Red Cross Youth collected toys and warm clothes to bring to this community which lives so far from the comforts of the city. The youth of this local branch collected aid throughout December, both locally and in the surrounding communities, to obtain some necessities for the Potrero Nuevo community.
Over 30 younth volunteers departed on board a city bus service, provided by a local carrier, as well as with several ambulances of the Urban Rescue Unit, toward this isolated community with more than 1,000 toys, blankets and warm clothes. From Cuyachapa, children and young volunteers walked with the humanitarian aid him for more than two hours to gain access to the community of Potrero Nuevo.
The entire community gathered in the forecourt of the local school and held a festival for children. At the same time, local mothers were on hand to undertake the task of selecting clothes and blankets that best met the needs their families.
Mexican Red Cross, as always appreciates all the support that people give to each of its activities. They are also always grateful to the media and reporters, who regularly broadcast relevant news stories. As a result Mexican society is familiar with the activities of the society, and responded with great support.
It is worth mentioning that on Sunday was used by the youth volunteers to take a tour around the area of the volcano, where they saw cascades of ice, frozen rivers, some forested areas and other areas completely deforested, all of this as reward for the great service they had provided to this isolated but vibrant community.
