More than three and a half years since the tsunami disaster, the Red Cross Red Crescent has helped hundreds of thousands of survivors take significant steps along the road to recovery. We have built thousands of houses and transitional shelters, health centres, schools and community meeting places. We have helped improve access to health care, and have supported people to rebuild their livelihoods and to deal with the emotional scars of the tsunami.

Top line facts and figures (as of 30 April 2008)
  • An estimated 3.173 million people have received assistance from the Red Cross Red Crescent.
  • 32,828 houses built and a further 19,480 under construction out of planned 52,308.
  • All the 21,112 transitional shelters planned have been built in Indonesia, the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
  • The enormous transitional shelter programme in Indonesia is completed bringing the total amount of transitional shelter built and handover to 19,923 to benefit 80,000 people.
  • 165 hospitals and clinics have been built or rehabilitated, with work in progress on a further 132 out of a total planned of 347.
  • 73 schools have been built with a further 44 under construction out of a total planned of 131.
  • Over 488,000 people now have access to an improved water source.

Top line financial information (as of 31 March 2008)
  • Approximately 3.099 billion Swiss francs were donated to Red Cross Red Crescent tsunami appeals.
  • 2.076 billion Swiss francs spent– 67 per cent of the 3.099 billion Swiss francs raised.
  • An estimated 2.65 billion Swiss francs will have been spent by year’s end (31/12/08) – about 86 per cent of total funds.
  • 1,031.5 million Swiss francs spent in Indonesia, 517 million Swiss francs in Sri Lanka, 150.1 million Swiss francs in Maldives – the three worst affected countries.
  • 815 million Swiss francs on shelter and community construction, 319 million Swiss francs on health and care (including water and sanitation), 391 million Swiss francs spent on emergency relief

Overall
  • The 26 December 2004 earthquake and tsunamis killed at least 226,000 people in ten countries across the Indian Ocean, sparking a tremendous outpouring of grief and generosity, and setting off one of the biggest humanitarian operations in recent memory.
  • 30,000 volunteers and hundreds of international staff from over 40 national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have been involved in the operation.
