Policies Policies
provide detailed direction for the International Federation's humanitarian
action in specific areas. They serve as a point of reference to
ensure consistency in decision-making worldwide. Policies define
the boundaries for the conduct of the Federation and the people
working within it. The policy framework
is centred around Strategy
2010, which sets the overall direction for the Federation's
work in the years to come. Policies are grouped within six categories.
All National Society and Federation staff, delegates
and volunteers must be able to access, understand and implement
these policies. It is equally important that the authorities, agencies
and organizations with whom the National Societies and the Federation
work on a daily basis or in time of crisis, are aware of the nature
and content of these policies. National
Societies are increasingly involved in establishing and reviewing
policies, which ensures that these policies are appropriate. This
gives National Societies ownership of these policies and a will
to implement them. In addition, National Societies can use Federation
policies as a basis to develop their own, more detailed policies
taking into account local needs, constraints and relationships.
With a clear set of policies and a broad operational experience
across the globe, Red Cross Red Crescent can increasingly be a credible
advocate for changes that will improve the lives of vulnerable people.
