Armenia: Population movement

Tens of thousands of people have crossed into Armenia via the Lachin corridor leaving everything behind, since the deadly escalation of hostilities. Food, essential services, and medicines are scarce and telecommunications services have been disrupted, making it hard for families to contact one another. The IFRC and its membership are seeking CHF 20 million (of which the IFRC Secretariat seeks CHF 15 million) to support the Armenian Red Cross to meet the needs of families arriving at humanitarian service points including food, water, first aid, and much-needed psychosocial support. A team of Libyan Red Crescent volunteers wade through flood waters caused by Storm Daniel in September 2023 to reach affected communities.

Libya: Storm Daniel

Storm Daniel hit north-eastern Libya on Sunday 10 September, bringing strong winds and sudden heavy rainfall which led to massive flooding, devastation and deaths. Infrastructure has been greatly damaged, including dams near Derna that burst, causing flooding which has swept away entire neighbourhoods. Libyan Red Crescent teams and volunteers were first on the ground, evacuating people and providing first aid and search and rescue efforts. Through this Emergency Appeal, the IFRC is supporting the Libyan Red Crescent to provide emergency shelter, psychosocial support, healthcare, clean water and food to affected communities and restore family links with missing loved ones.

A Moroccan Red Crescent volunteer assists with search and rescue activities following a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the country on 8 September 2023.

Morocco: Earthquake

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Morocco on September 8, killing and injuring thousands of people and causing widespread destruction. The Moroccan Red Crescent Society (MRCS) responded immediately, providing first aid and psychosocial support, helping transport the injured to hospitals, evacuating people from damaged buildings and providing dignified burial management.Through this appeal, the IFRC is supporting MRCS to meet the immediate and early recovery needs of 500,000 affected people. Priorities include providing food and safe water, essential household items, shelter support, health and mental health services, and cash assistance.

People fleeing conflict in Sudan in April 2023 arrive across the border in neighbouringChad. Most people are women, children and older people and are setting up tents with whatever they were able to carry with them.

Sudan crisis: Regional population movement

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has led hundreds of thousands of people—many of whom are women, children and older people—to flee the countryto find safety across borders. Those arriving in neighbouring countries have experienced dire humanitarian conditions. Many have been caught in the crossfire and struggled to access food, water, and health services for some time. Through this Emergency Appeal, the IFRC is supporting Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Egypt, Chad, South Sudan, Central African Republic (CAR), Ethiopia and Libya to provide essential humanitarian assistance to people fleeing Sudan.

Myanmar Red Cross Society volunteers clean up an area of Thingankyun township which was struck by Cyclone Mocha in May 2023.

Myanmar: Cyclone Mocha

Cyclone Mocha made landfall in Myanmar on 14 May as a category 4 tropical cyclone, bringing winds of up to 250 km/h, heavy rains, storm surges, flash floods, and landslides. It is the strongest cyclone in the Bay of Bengal in the last 10 years, and causedsignificant damage to people's homes, infrastructure, and power and water services. Through this Emergency Appeal, the IFRC is supporting the Myanmar Red Cross Society to expand its provision of immediate relief, essential livelihood support and early recovery activities.
