On 21 March, Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Bekele Geleta, accompanied by the Head of IFRC’s Regional Office, Anne Leclerc, paid a working visit to Viet Nam.

At a meeting between Geleta and H.E. State President Truong Tan Sang, the latter – who is also Honorary President of the Viet Nam Red Cross Society – recognized IFRC’s contribution in the humanitarian field in Viet Nam during its 24 years in the country. The President urged IFRC to continue its role in coordinating relief work in the country while also providing further capacity building and technical support to Viet Nam Red Cross.

H.E. State President also expressed the government’s willingness to take action upon the request for granting IFRC International Organisation status in the country.

Productive partnership

During his visit, Geleta also met with Viet Nam Red Cross Society leaders, National Society representatives and relevant government agencies. Red Cross President Nguyen Hai Duong affirmed the importance of IFRC’s presence in the country, particularly in disaster preparedness and disaster risk reduction, healthcare, and organizational development. Within the past 20 years, IFRC has mobilized over 124 million Swiss francs to support the National Society in providing services to millions of people across the country.

President Duong also encouraged IFRC to strengthen engagement with non-government organizations, embassies and other partners in development. “We would like to see IFRC continue and expand its presence in Viet Nam,” he said.

Geleta applauded the significant progress the society has made over the years, especially with successful programmes including the ‘Cow Bank programme’, ‘Tet for the poor and victims of Agent Orange’, and ‘Each organization, each individual supports a humanitarian need’.

Since 2010, the Viet Nam Red Cross Society has mobilized 2.8 million Swiss francs to support the Cow Bank campaign. In 2014, it also mobilized 26.5 million Swiss francs worth of assistance to 1.7 million households in Viet Nam.

He also expressed his hope that the national Red Cross society continues to promote its work so that other societies can learn from these efforts.

President Duong and Secretary General Geleta confirmed further collaboration and cooperation both nationally and internationally, in order to support the expansion of humanitarian activities in line with society’s auxiliary role to the Government of Viet Nam.
